This announcement is for a generic Family Services Specialist I/II on the Adult Services team with a primary workload of Adult Services and Adult Protective Services cases.

Family Services Specialist I represents the entry level employees working under close supervision while being trained in program areas such as, Adult Services/Adult Protective Services, Child Protective Services, Foster Care/Adoption, Child Care, investigations, family assessments, long-term care assessments and Employment Services. Employees perform routine-to journey-level casework activities and the casework usually is reviewed by the supervisor prior to implementing a case action. Upon completion of the training program and attainment of necessary approvals, the employee shall be redefined to a full-performance Family Services Specialist II.

Employees are responsible for developing and implementing individualized service plans involving the application of casework of Adult Services/Adult Protective Services. Employees may provide services in all program areas or specialize in one or several program areas. Other non-essential duties may be assigned to the position as needed.

Minimum Qualifications

Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in a Human Services field or minimum of a Bachelor’s degree in any field and a minimum of two years of appropriate and related experience in a Human Services area (Section 22VAC40-670-20 of the Administrative Code of Virginia).

Demonstrated ability to: communicate effectively both orally and in writing; interview, assess needs, counsel and refer clients to other resources as needed; develop and implement service plans in order to insure the delivery of appropriate services to the client; make sound judgments within the framework of existing laws, policies, and regulations; respond to the client’s emotions in order to accomplish services objectives; plan and manage own work activities including service delivery preparing reports, and correspondence, record keeping responsibilities and related activities; establish and maintain effective relationships; stay abreast of current trends and developments in the field; function effectively in a high stress, crisis oriented situations; and keep information confidential. Knowledge of: investigating and interviewing techniques; legal procedures and client population as related to program area; and social, economic, and health problems. Skill in operating a personal computer and associated software; and the operation of a motor vehicle.

Preferred Qualifications

Possession of a BSW or MSW degree and a Commonwealth of Virginia Social Worker license are desirable. Prefer previous work experience in a Local Department of Social Services. Prefer experience providing direct services to older adults, adults with disabilities, and children and families. Prefer work experience in Adult Services and/or Adult Protective Services. Prefer social work/case management experience in the following areas: Long-term care, nursing home, hospital, assisted living, law enforcement. Prefer experience in any of the following software programs: ASAPS, EPAS, PeerPlace, SPIDeR.

Special Requirements

Applicants must have a valid Virginia driver’s license without restrictions and the driving record must meet agency standards on or before hire date; applicants must also meet a level of insurability set by the agency. On call work, after hours and weekends, are required on a rotating basis, therefore, applicants must live within a 1 hour drive of the agency. Responsible for shelter duty during times of disaster.

This position is covered under Code of Virginia §63.2-1720 requiring applicants to submit to fingerprinting and provide personal descriptive information for a criminal history record check through the Central Criminal Records Exchange and a search of the Central Registry.
