THIS IS A RE-ADVERTISEMENT – PREVIOUS APPLICANTS MUST REAPPLY TO BE CONSIDEREDThe Western Tidewater Health District is currently seeking a part-time wage (maximum 1,500 hours per year) Breastfeeding Peer Counselor to provide breastfeeding promotion, education, services and support to a diverse population who participate in the WIC program. The Counselor will demonstrate and give instruction in the proper ways of holding a child during feeding, explain changes in bodily functions, the importance of a healthy diet and personal hygiene, and will answer specific questions about breastfeeding and its benefits in individual and classroom settings. Creates a breastfeeding friendly environment while promoting breastfeeding as the preferred method to individuals and groups. Contacts new pregnant participants before delivery to discuss breastfeeding progress and/or issues. Offers breastfeeding WIC participants continued education and support on maintaining a positive breastfeeding relationship with their infant throughout the first year. Screens and assists with electric breast pump loan arrangements according with WIC policies. Follows-up with families and makes appropriate referrals within the medical health system and to community resources. Will complete Virginia’s Loving Support through Peer Counseling Training Program and Skills Checklist; meet a minimum of 4 hours of lactation management training annually to enhance knowledge of breastfeeding skills; attend local, regional or state breastfeeding promotion activities and training when possible. The Counselor works closely with the district WIC staff and is supervised by the WIC Program Coordinator. The Counselor will travel throughout the district as required/assigned. Responds to participants requests by phone or walk-in as needed. NOTE: Wage positions do not offer benefits such as leave, health benefits, retirement and the annual hours are limited to 1,500 hours.

Minimum Qualifications

Knowledge and experience in breastfeeding benefits and basic pre-natal/breastfeeding women’s dietary needs. Must have successfully breastfeed one or more infants for at least six months continuously. Knowledge of the WIC program. . Knowledge of English grammar, punctuation, and usage. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, and interact well with a diverse population. Skill in using Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, and Outlook. Graduation from high school, or equivalent combination of training and experience. Has reliable transportation.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience with the WIC program.

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify.
