Job Description

VDOT is seeking qualified candidates to perform a combination of skilled equipment operation, preventative maintenance and manual labor in order to build, maintain and repair structures and/or roads. Equipment operation may include backhoes, dump trucks, tractors and similar equipment. Manual labor may include performing skilled carpentry tasks such as building and setting forms, installing and tying reinforcing steel, and concrete replacement and finishing. Additional requirements of these positions are the ability to accurately carry out instructions and complete assignments with minimal supervision; and to install environmental protection measures around structures to prevent contamination of surrounding areas, which may include silt fence, sand bags, dirt bags, etc. and/or the use of water pumps in a manner so that no permit violations are incurred. Successful applicants will utilize appropriate hand and power tools and will perform emergency roadway operations as an essential employee. This position is required to work outside normal work hours as necessary.

Staunton District Bridge Crews are located at the following areas: Lexington, Verona, Harrisonburg, Luray, Edinburg.

Minimum Qualifications

Qualified candidates will demonstrate experience in equipment operations, preventive maintenance and minor repairs on equipment/tools, and the ability to perform physically demanding manual labor. Candidates should have demonstrated skills in carpentry, concrete replacement and finishing, building and setting forms, and installing and tying reinforcing steel for bridge elements. Additional demonstrated experience is needed in sandblasting paint and applying bonding compounds to structures and decks and working in and around water, and at various heights. Accurately carry out instructions and complete assignments without continuous review or supervision. Valid Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with appropriate endorsements at time of hire, or ability to obtain within 6 months of employment.
