Overview:

General Responsibilities An employee in this class performs semi-skilled and unskilled work in grounds maintenance. Work is performed under regular supervision of a grounds supervisor.

Essential Functions The following duties are intended to provide a basic idea of tasks that will be performed in this job. Any omission of a specific task does not exclude the task from being required to be performed. Other duties may be required and/or assigned, and management reserves the right to revise the job description.

  • Falling and removing trees and limbs.
  • Removing debris from around buildings and their grounds.
  • Preparing game and practice fields for the school’s athletic teams.
  • Interacting with principals, teachers, and building managers to assess need and work to be done.
  • Estimating scope of work during quote seeking.
  • Inspecting work done by contractors.
  • Follows daily work orders as needed for each school.
  • Inspects grounds and facilities to identify needed maintenance and repairs.
  • Participates in snow removal as necessary at various school sites.
  • Drags the baseball or softball infield using a field drag machine and builds, repairs and patches holes in pitching mounds, home plate and turf playing field.
  • Edges the areas surrounding the ball fields, warming tracks, and infield, and removes cuttings.
  • Top dresses, aerates, verticuts and seeds ball field and landscape areas.
  • Places and removes field tarps, pitcher’s mound tarps and home plate tarps.
  • Fertilizes and irrigates ball fields.
  • Operates different types of rotary and reel mowers to mow infields, outfields and soccer fields.
  • Builds pitching mounds and constructs home plate areas.
  • May spray herbicides and pesticides on the fields utilizing spray tank truck and hand spray units.
  • Lays out and paints logos and lines on playing fields using a paint striping machine.
  • Lays out base lines, foul lines, base blocks, and pitching mound slopes using tape measures, line level and string
  • Lays down base lines with chalk or marble dust on ball fields.
  • Installs goals and goal posts for soccer and football fields.
  • Removes and stores all equipment used during games.
  • Inspects landscaped areas, equipment, grounds and facilities to identify needed maintenance and repairs, to include minor irrigation repairs.
  • Performs related work as required.

Qualification:

Knowledge and Skill

  • Knowledge and experience with hand tools and power tools.
  • Knowledge of turf maintenance and the operation of turf maintenance equipment.
  • Knowledge of the preparation of recreation and professional fields.
  • Knowledge of the types and application of pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers.
  • Knowledge of occupational safety and health hazards and ability to follow prescribed safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of the proper mixing and preparation of chemicals according to labels and state and federal laws.
  • Knowledge of turf maintenance and the operation of turf maintenance equipment.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds or more.
  • Ability to lift spray tanks, tarps, paint cans, and turf maintenance equipment
  • Ability to read coherently and write legibly.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations required to set up the fields according to game regulations.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods under varying climatic conditions.
  • Skills in effectively communication one’s self to school officials through writing or speech.
  • Skills in establishing effective working relationships with other employees and the public.
