The Department of General Services, Division of Consolidated Laboratories (DCLS) seeks a qualified candidate to serve as a Senior Scientist in the Epidemiologic Support Group. The Epidemiologic Support Group performs testing in the areas of Molecular Subtyping, Environmental Water Microbiology, Food Microbiology including conventional and molecular foodborne pathogen detection, pathogen characterization by molecular subtyping for foodborne disease surveillance and outbreak response, and Regulatory Food Monitoring. This position is responsible for serving as the Whole Genome Sequencing Technical Supervisor for the Molecular Subtyping laboratory performing next-generation sequencing and DNA fingerprint analysis of pathogens isolated from clinical, food and environmental samples associated with communicable disease outbreaks or national food recalls. The Senior Scientist is responsible for coordinating a timely laboratory response to communicable disease and foodborne outbreaks, reporting critical results directly to Epidemiologists at the Virginia Department of Health, and serving as a point of contact for the Mid-Atlantic region PulseNet community to assist with the coordination of all PulseNet Foodborne Disease Surveillance initiatives specifically related to next generation sequencing (NGS) testing and analysis. This position supports the implementation of next-generation sequencing methodologies for enhanced characterization of circulating outbreak strains of bacterial isolates submitted to DCLS and communicating results to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Mid-Atlantic region labs as well as the Virginia Department of Health.

This Senior Scientist will coordinate daily customer service efforts impacting the Molecular Subtyping WGS laboratory, review analytical WGS results, update/review SOP’s, monitor all QA procedures and perform routine analysis of specimens. In addition, this position will perform method review, assist in method validation and implementation, cost analysis, maintain and monitor laboratory safety practices, coordinate continuing education for DCLS and Mid-Atlantic region public health lab scientists and maintain the competency assessment program. These duties are performed independently with minimal supervision from the Group Manager.

Some after-hour, weekend and holiday work required.

Minimum Qualifications

The successful candidates must have a Bachelor of Science degree in Microbiology, Medical Technology, Molecular Biology, Clinical Laboratory Science or a related field, have comprehensive laboratory experience in Microbiology and Molecular Biology, AND comply with CLIA Technical Supervisor requirements. The successful applicant must have work related laboratory experience, and technical knowledge and the ability to train staff with the following: conventional and real time polymerase chain reaction (PCR), sequencing (preferably NGS) isolation of microorganisms on selective and non-selective media, and complex data analysis using complex data management software (preferably NGS). The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to coordinate, lead, and prioritize work of others; to train personnel; and to work effectively in a team environment. Qualified candidates will possess the following: ability to perform moderately complex microbiology procedures and highly complex molecular laboratory procedures independently; experience with complex instrumentation and computerized laboratory information management systems; excellent quantitative analysis skills; the ability to write standard operating procedures; knowledge and experience with laboratory safety procedures; ability to record, interpret, review, and document laboratory findings and validation data; troubleshooting of assay and instrumentation performance; understanding of laboratory QA/QC concepts and theory; proven communication skills (oral and written); ability to lift 30 pounds; and experience with computers, including spreadsheets, MS Office products and lab software programs.

Preferred Qualifications

A Master’s degree in Microbiology is preferred.

Next Generation Sequencing testing and data analysis experience is preferred.

Biosafety Level 3 (BSL-3) containment laboratory work may be required and the OSHA Respiratory Protection Standard is required which involves passing a respiratory physical prior to working in a BSL-3 laboratory. The respiratory physical will be provided by the employer.
