Virginia State Government Certified Nurse Practitioner (RCX17) in Richmond, Virginia

Position Information
Job Description

Richmond City Health District is searching for a Nurse Practitioner to provide direct patient care services for the health district’s Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) Clinic and our Resource Centers, as well as facilitate and/or assist with related population health measures.

Duties include health assessment and treatment to patients in our STI clinic, which is one of the highest-volume STI clinics in the state. Richmond City Health District has seven resource centers, located in or around city housing developments and/or other underserved areas; the NP provides needed health care services through those centers, including family planning and STI services, and develops a close relationship with the community served by his/her particular resource center(s) to improve health access and outcomes. Direct clinical care duties include but are not limited to obtaining a complete health history, performing physical examinations, making a patient assessment, ordering diagnostic tests and procedures, interpreting test results and prescribing appropriate therapy and/or referrals as needed.

As RCHD transitions to a more population health model for its maternity and family planning services, the NP may also provide some direct clinical services in family planning in our main clinic, as well as training and capacity building in the community (e.g., training providers in the placement of long-acting reversible contraception). Our maternity and family planning clinics are some of the very few safety net clinics in place for our uninsured and underinsured women in the City of Richmond. Work is performed in collaboration with a supervising physician and according to legally accepted nurse practitioner protocols, local/state policies and procedures, and the Nurse Practice Act. This position also includes completion of medical records in a timely fashion and referral to the supervising/consulting physician in an appropriate manner. This position participates in quality assurance activities.

Minimum Qualifications

Considerable experience in Public Health Nursing working with socioeconomic population. Knowledge of communicable diseases and family planning (adult and teens). Ability to provide appropriate health care to citizens of Richmond City in both the STI clinic and the Resource Centers (which may involve both STI and family planning services). Ability to evaluate outcomes of treatment regimens; ability to make appropriate referrals to health care centers and other service providers as necessary. Demonstrated ability to work with patients from diverse socioeconomic backgrounds and cultural sensitivity to patients from different populations. Must possess a valid license to practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the Commonwealth of Virginia with prescribing authority. Excellent written and oral communication skills.

Preferred Qualifications

Preferred Bilingual. Masters Degree in Nursing. Experience with and/or interest in population health.

Special Requirements

Employment is contingent upon satisfactory results of a state and federal criminal history background check and the Department of Social Service’s Child Abuse and Neglect Central Registry check, U.S. HHS IG Exclusion List check, employment reference check, and E-Verify. The selected candidate must complete a Statement of Personal Economic Interests as a condition of employment, if applicable (Va. Code § 2.2-3114). Other financial, credit, driving, or other background checks prior to employment may be required for certain positions.

Special Instructions to Applicants

A completed application, including previous employment, salary history and education/training must be submitted online at No faxed, emailed or mailed applications will be considered. The Virginia Department of Health is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
