JMT is seeking an experienced, detail oriented individual to perform construction inspection activities on a large Civil Construction project in the Herndon area of VA.

The inspector will perform inspection services overseeing the contractors work to ensure compliance with project requirements. Candidates may be required to test materials used for utility installations, roadway subgrades, structures or bridges, and maintenance construction projects of moderate to considerable complexity while promoting open communications between field personnel and Project Management Staff. Candidates must be able to read and interpret the contract plans, standards and specifications and must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing. The Inspector will work to ensure that all phases of the work meet required specifications, works with the contractor to correct discrepant items of work. Maintains project documentation and ensures it accurately details construction progress, activities, materials, environmental and safety compliance. Ensures accurate and timely recording and computation of all daily activities and prepares and submits project inspection reports in a timely manner. Interacts with contractors, and other internal and external parties to respond to inquiries and resolve field issues. Work schedule varies according to job assignments and/or contractors schedule which may include night work, weekends, and holidays.

Required Skills

  • High School graduate or GED

  • Read and interpret documents such as safety regulations, Design Drawings, Specifications, Special Provisions and Standards.

  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with the contractor, project staff and others as required.

Required Experience

  • Computer literate with experience using the internet, MS Office, database software and VDOT software.

  • 1-2 years of roadway/bridge construction experience preferred.

The following certifications are required for this position:

  • VDOT Soil and Aggregate Field Compaction

  • VDOT Asphalt Field I

  • VDOT Asphalt Field II

  • VDOT Concrete Field

  • ACI Field technician I

  • DEQ certification for Erosion and Sediment Control (Inspector, provisional is acceptable)

  • DEQ certification for Stormwater Management (Inspector, provisional is acceptable)

  • Nuclear Gauge Safety Training

  • Intermediate Work Zone Traffic Control

  • 10 Hour OSHA Safety Training

  • The following certifications need to be obtained within one year:

  • VDOT Pavement Marking

  • VDOT Surface treatment

  • VDOT Slurry Surfacing

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in the field. Ability to extensively perform bending, kneeling, standing, shoveling, and lifting and carrying objects weighing up to 25 lbs as needed. Work may be conducted outside in heat/cold, wet/humid, and dry/arid conditions.
