Position Description:

The Surveillance and Automation Solutions business area within Harris is seeking a principal system engineer with RADAR experience to support the pursuit and execution of air traffic surveillance programs.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for supporting the pursuit activities from an engineering perspective to respond to market surveys and create proposals for delivery to the end-customer. Works with potential customers to determine needs and develop requirements. Leads internal development activities to evolve our solution. Reviews prospective vendors’ offerings to ensure their products and technologies enhance the strength of our solution.

  • Responsible for leading systems development efforts, providing technical and project leadership to diverse technical teams. This includes

  • Logical and systematic conversion of customer requirements into system solutions that address technical, schedule, and cost constraints.

  • Top level system design and architectural development.

  • System analysis to support performance evaluation, functional design decisions, and detailed trade studies for air traffic surveillance systems.

  • System-level requirements assessment, derived allocation hardware/software requirements, architectural development, and interface definition studies to translate customer requirements into hardware and software specifications.

Provide technical leadership and oversight of teammates and subcontractors, including creation of radar specifications, cooperative design optimization, design reviews, and monitoring of manufacturing, testing and certification.


  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Systems Engineering, or Physics with ten (10) or more years’ experience in systems engineering activities. Master’s degree preferred.

  • Fully versed in all aspects of RADAR theory.

  • Eight (8) or more years’ hands-on experience with one or more of the following sensor systems:

  • Primary Surveillance RADAR

  • Secondary Surveillance RADAR

  • Weather RADAR systems

  • Surface movement or perimeter security RADAR systems.

  • Working knowledge of FAA and national defense RADAR systems.

  • Must have strong oral and written communication skills to present information to team members, management and customers.

  • The successful candidate will possess strong initiative and ability to function in a dynamic environment.

  • Four (4) or more years’ experience working with and leading external teammates or subcontractors.

  • Proficient in the use of Microsoft Office applications, MS Project, Visio, MATLAB, requirements management tools, and UML tools.

  • Must be a US Citizen - will be required to provide proof of citizenship.

  • Must be able to obtain an FAA Position of Public Trust clearance.

Preferred Additional Skills:

  • Direct experience with FAA and DoD surveillance systems.

  • Working knowledge of air traffic control systems and their operation.

  • Four (4) or more years’ experience working with and leading external teammates and/or subcontractors.

  • Programming experience with C/C++, Python, Perl, or MATLAB.
