Chesterfield County Building Inspector (2) in Chesterfield, Virginia
PLEASE NOTE: There are two inspector positions to be filled. Successful candidates must have strong structural skills and will be hired at the level commensurate with experience and qualifications (Building Inspector I - $36,903 - $43,432; Building Inspector II - $42,157 - $49,616; Building Inspector III - $48,169 - $56,690). *High school diploma or GED; construction/engineering technology or vocational program degree/certificate preferred; construction experience (three years for Building Inspector I & II; five years for Building Inspector III); code enforcement experience (familiarity with the Uniform Statewide Building Code for Building Inspector I; 1 year for Building Inspector II; two years for Building Inspector III); or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of building construction; the ability to read and interpret construction documents; ability to use a personal computer and software as part of the daily job; excellent communication and relationship building skills; ability to traverse construction sites and climb ladders. Virginia Certified Erosion and Sediment Control Inspector certification required within 18 months of employment for all levels of Inspector. Each level of Inspector must possess or obtain the following additional certifications: Building Inspector I - Virginia certified in one of the following within 18 months of hire: Residential Building Inspector, Residential Electrical Inspector, Residential Plumbing and Mechanical Inspector (both certifications); Building Inspector II - Virginia certified Combination Residential Inspector at hire; Building Inspector III - Virginia certified Combination Residential Inspector and either Property Maintenance Inspector or at least one commercial inspector at hire. *Good driving record required. Must not reflect a total accumulation of six or more negative points within the past three years or a major violation within the past four years. Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check and education/degree verification required.
(All Inspector levels) Perform inspections of structures for compliance with applicable building codes and ordinances; author letters, legal notices and other documents; work with people to resolve issues; read and interpret building codes and related ordinances; use a personal computer; perform all job duties with customer and results focus. This position may be cross-trained to perform any inspection, plan review or administrative job duty within the department. Perform other work as required.
